When one or both partners are considering leaving the relationship, it is important for each person to have space to openly discuss their thoughts, struggles, goals, and concerns without worrying about how the other person may react.
Separate conversations also allow the discernment counselor to better understand each individual’s needs and perspective.
In some situations, a partner may also be wrestling with sensitive or complicated issues they are not yet ready to discuss together. Having private conversations with the therapist can help them process those concerns more clearly.
During this process, the therapist is often helping the “leaning-in” partner better understand the situation while also providing space and support for the “leaning-out” partner to reflect honestly about the future of the relationship.
