What is Eating Disorder Awareness Week?

Eating Disorder Awareness Week is a time to highlight what eating disorders are, how prevalent they are, and the actions we can take to help. It’s a time of year dedicated to spreading awareness, advocacy, resources, and support to those who have eating disorders or want to help a loved one with an eating disorder. (National Eating Disorder Association)

What’s an Eating Disorder?

An eating disorder is a psychological condition that involves a disturbance of eating behaviors with emotional and cognitive distress. These are very serious mental health concerns that can negatively impact physical, metal, emotional, and social functioning. (American Psychiatric Association)

Where Do I Go To Seek Help?

It’s important to see a physician to make sure your medical needs can be addressed. Afterwards, you can seek support from specialized treatment centers to determine what level of care is recommended for your recovery journey.

These include The Emily Program, Melrose, and Roger’s Behavioral Health. We also have expert eating disorder therapists here at ALL IN!

How Do I Support Someone With An Eating Disorder?

Take some time to learn and educate yourselves about eating disorders. Validate their struggles while also encouraging them to talk to a professional. Try to be neutral with food and avoid comments about bodies. Consider family therapy or attending support groups. Be sure to also take care of yourself too!

How To Spread Awareness About Eating Disorders

Do some research! The more you learn, the more you can share your knowledge with others! Consider sharing your own story-many people can feel validated they aren’t alone. Volunteer and make your voice heard!

Donations to treatment centers or NEDA are also always appreciated.
